Stock picking opponents’ common critique is that anyone can look like a genius in this kind of market.  To a certain extent this is true, and we would rather be lucky than good, but frankly, we have been better than good lately.

As you likely recall, the daily blog objective is provide you daily insight into stocks that we believe could make a big move in the short term, as in a matter of weeks.  Sometimes we get it right and other times we do not.  In Q1, we got it way right….

As of the close of the market on March 28th, which marked the end of 1Q13, we highlighted a grand total of 38 stocks for the period, under our Market Monitor blog posts.  30 stocks are in the green while only 8 in the red.  As you can see by the table below, our top 5 picks rose an average of 39%, while our bottom 5 performers declined an average of 10.7% for the same period. Are you Sirius?

The Big Winner

Lannett (LCI) is just on fire!   As we mentioned in the original blog post, there really is no news or backing fundamentals, but the stock continues to climb. The charts remain very bullish in the short term but selling a portion of the position is a prudent move.

Cadence Pharmaceuticals (CADX) is a great turn-around story, down 8.6% on our mid quarter review, now up 25%.  The company introduced a new drug to the market and the charts remain very bullish in the short term.  The stock may run some more.

The Big Loser

Thompson Creek Metals (TC) may have been a reach into the metals industry.  The short term analysis is just awful, very bearish.  It may be time to cut your losses if you bought this one.

We made some improvements from the first quarter mid-term, so we will give ourselves an A-.  Let’s keep it rolling.

Have a great week!
